Federal Labour Minister resigns from cabinet

MP Seamus O’Regan and Justin Trudeau

The federal Minister of Labour and Trudeau ally is resigning from cabinet and will not seek re-election.

Seamus O’Reganwas elected to Parliament in 2015 as the MP for St. John's South-Mount Pearl. O'Regan has been in cabinet since 2017 serving in natural resources, Indigenous services and veterans affairs portfolios. He took over as labour minister in 2021. He made the announcement on social media yesterday. His resignation from cabinet is immediate.

"I need to be a better husband, son, uncle, and friend, and this job means, and deserves, a lot of time in order to do it well."

O’Regan’s departure does not appear to come as a critiscm of the incumbent Prime Minister. In his statement, he says, “"I'll miss working with this prime minister, as I have," O'Regan said. "I believe he'll be regarded as one of the most consequential and important leaders in our country's history. His strength, endurance and vision are unmatched, and they will see us through the next election."

He posted his full statement on social media:

O'Regan is also a longtime friend of Prime Minister Trudeau. O'Regan was in Trudeau's wedding party in 2005. In a caucus of growing discontent towards the leader, O’Regan was a guaranteed Trudeau ally.

Trudeau’s cabinet will meet today to fill vacancies. It is expected that Trudeau will make a major cabinet shuffle in the coming weeks ahead of the Liberal caucus retreat. It has been reported that Mark Carney has had discussions about joining the government.

The federal Liberal Party has nominated 99 of the 155 incumbents.

Sask. NDP respond to Moe’s Shellbrook ad

The Saskatchewan NDP have responded to Premier Scott Moe’s recent ad about his hometown of Shellbrook.

Earlier this week, the Saskatchewan Party released a short ad highlighting Premier Scott Moe in his hometown of Shellbrook. The original ad had the Premier’s voice narrating why his hometown is motivating him to continue in the job.

The NDP responded on social media by editing the video to include news articles about hospital closures in Shellbrook with the ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ music playing in the background.

In the video's caption, the NDP said, “Scott Moe’s new TV commercial leaves out some important facts. We fixed it for him.” The video ended the same way the NDP ends all statements, by saying, “Saskatchewan, it’s time for a change.”

Constituency Profile Series: Sponsored by Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA)

SUMA represents over 80% of Saskatchewan residents —cities, towns, villages, resort villages, and northern municipalities—that come together as one urban voice.

We’ve been here since 1905, advancing collective member interests with various government bodies, improving local governance, and fostering municipal growth. We are the urban hubs where you live, work, and play. We're where your children go to school, where you attend medical appointments at the clinic, and where you stop for coffee.

Each week leading up to the 2024 election, The SKoop Political Briefing will highlight a constituency that has nominated a candidate from at least both major parties. Today, we look at Saskatoon Fairview. This constituency includes Confederation Park and Massey Place.

The incumbent:Vicki Mowat was first elected in a 2017 by-election and was re-elected in 2020. Prior to her election, Mowat was an officer in the Canadian Forces Reserves and worked with 2293 The North Saskatchewan Regiment Army Cadet Corps. As Commanding Officer of 2293 Army Cadets, Mowat also oversaw the creation of another Cadet Corps in Saskatoon’s Pleasant Hill Community School.

The challenger:Zahid Sandhu was acclaimed as the Saskatchewan Party candidate. Sandhu practised law in Pakistan before immigrating to Canada in 2011. He is now a business owner in Saskatoon.

The takeaway: This is a safe NDP seat. Mowat won with over 50% of the vote last time. This riding is an NDP stronghold with names like Andy Iwanchuk and Chris Axworthy. The Sask Party did hold this seat from 2011-2017.
