Sask. Lieutenant Governor celebrates fifth and final year
Lieutenant Governor Russell Mirasty.
Russell Mirasty sat down with CKOM News to discuss his fifth anniversary as the Kingâs representative in Canada, a term that lasts five years.
Mirasty grew up on Lac La Ronge Indian Reserve and was sworn in as Saskatchewanâs 23rd Lieutenant Governor, and the provinceâs first Indigenous person to fill the role.
Reflecting on his time in the role, Mirasty remembered getting the call saying, âThey only gave us 48 hours to decide, so we had to make a decision very quickly. Donna was there in the house so I told her, and she was immediately supportive of the idea. Donna phoned our two children, and they were supportive as well. I took the full two days to think about it. By that time, I had been working for 41 years, and I thought âIs this really something I want to commit to for another five years?â On top of that, I had to think about being an Indigenous person, stepping into this very colonial role. Indigenous people should be at least given the opportunity to occupy these different positions across the country. I finally decided that I think this was something that I should do, so obviously accepted. Here we are.â
Mirasty looks back fondly at meeting various figures including King Charles, George Reed, and more. He is also proud of integrating Indigenous culture in a role that has not seen someone like him before.
His predecessor will be announced later this year and when asked to give advice, Mirasty said, âBe flexible, be open-minded, be willing to meet people in their communities and just enjoy what Saskatchewan has to offer.â

Regina council delays decision on flag flying at City Hall
Regina City Council has tabled a motion to alter the cityâs flag policy for a second time after an on-the-floor amendment proposed Wednesday looked to prevent any flags ârelated to countriesâ other than Canada from being flown at city hall.
Incumbent councillor for Ward 1 who is not seeking re-election Cheryl Stadnichuk and Ward 8 councillor Shannon Zachidniak brought a motion forward months ago that would not allow other countriesâ flags to fly at City Hall if the country is committing genocide or under investigation for violating human rights.
Following extensive discussion, Councillor Terina Nelson put forward an amendment she said was an effort to simplify and prevent further âback-and-forth.â If passed, the city could fly only six approved flags, including Canada, Saskatchewan, Regina, Treaty 4, the MĂŠtis flag, and the Union Jack.
That motion was deferred after city administration said it would restrict protocol for visits of foreign leaders.
The final decision will be made in September as the council voted to defer. There are many other items deferred to later in the year and council only has a handful of meeting left until the fall election.

Warman candidates Erica Baerwald and Terry Jenson
Each week leading up to the 2024 election, The SKoop Political Briefing will highlight a constituency that has nominated a candidate from at least both major parties. Today, we look at Warman. This is a new riding created from Martensville-Warman, breaking up the two smaller centres.
The incumbent:Terry Jenson was first elected in 2020. Jenson currently serves in cabinet as the Minister of SaskBuilds and Procurement. He and his wife owned the Clarkâs Crossing Gazette and he was the past president of the Saskatchewan Weekly Newspaper Association.
The challenger: The NDP held a contested nomination won by Erica Baerwald.Baerwald is a manager at an international relief and development organization and a town councillor in Hepburn. Her career has focused on conflict resolution, policy research, and the implementation of training programs.
The takeaway: This is a safe Sask. Party seat. Jenson won handily in 2020 with 74% of the vote. With new boundaries, Warman will get its own constituency this year. In the past, this seat was held by the Sask. Partyâs Nancy Heppner and her father Ben Heppner before that.
