Todayā€™s Top Stories

Sask. faces highest economic stress in Canada: Angus Reid

A new comprehensive report released by Angus Reid has found that people in Saskatchewan face the country's highest levels of financial stress.

The study finds that 67% of Saskatchewan residents face economic stress, specifically noting Saskatoon and Regina as cities where people feel more financial anxiety than any other. Going deeper into the numbers, 56% of residents feel worse off than last year, 45% believe it will get even worse next year, and 48% are struggling to feed their families.

Cost of Living is by far the most important issue facing Canadians right now, with 60% of Canadians choosing that option as their top three concerns. The other top issues include Healthcare (41%), Housing Affordability (33%), and Climate Change (21%)

NDP leader Carla Beck responded to the report by posting a video to social media. She reiterated her commitment to pause the 15 cent PST on gas and diesel, saying ā€œPeople who used to be able to afford a family vacation are now living paycheque to paycheque, pinching pennies just to pay the bills.ā€

Federal race heats up in the Southeast

Torquay Mayor Michael Strachan.

Just like the weather, an unexpected contested nomination race is heating up in the federal riding of Souris-Moose Mountain.

Michael Strachan is throwing his name into the ring. At his campaign launch, he said, ā€œHaving been asked to run by residents and business leaders in the riding, I am pleased to announce my candidacy for the riding of Souris-Moose Mountain,ā€ Strachan stated. ā€œTogether we can build a stronger, more common sense-focused, and fairer Canada for everyone.ā€

Strachan has served as the Mayor of Torquay since 2009 and serves on the Board of Directors for SUMA.

The riding of Souris-Moose Mountain last held a contested nomination in 2015 that saw six candidates, Strachan being one of them. The race was won by Dr. Robert Kitchen, who made the surprise announcement that he would not be seeking re-election.

Moosomin MLA Steven Bonk rescinded his Sask. Party nomination earlier this week to seek the federal seat.

This is bound to be a hotly-contested race as Pierre Poilievreā€™s Conservatives look to be positioned to form the next government. The riding of Souris-Moose Mountain is one of the safest Conservative seats in the country. In 2019, Kitchen won with nearly 85% of the vote. In 2021, the number was still strong at 77%, having only dropped as the Peopleā€™s Party placed second with 9%.

Constituency Profile Series: Sponsored by Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA)

SUMA represents over 80% of Saskatchewan residents ā€”cities, towns, villages, resort villages, and northern municipalitiesā€”that come together as one urban voice.

Each week leading up to the 2024 election, The SKoop Political Briefing will highlight a constituency that has nominated a candidate from at least both major parties. Today, we look at Meadow Lake. This riding has largely stayed the same since 2003. It includes the communities of Meadow Lake, St. Walburg and surrounding rural areas.

The incumbent: Jeremy Harrison is a well-established political figure in the community. He served as an MP for this area from 2004-2006 and has been the MLA since 2007. He has served in various cabinet positions and is currently the Minister of Trade and Export Development.

The challenger: Miles Nachbaur was acclaimed as the NDP candidate for the riding. He is the Executive Director of Meadow Lake & Area Early Childhood Services. He is also a coach and community volunteer.

The takeaway: This is a safe seat for the Sask. Party. Although the NDP did claim this seat from 1991-2007, Harrison has won the riding easily in the past three elections.
