Teachers vote ‘No’ on contract offer

Saskatchewan teachers have resoundingly voted ‘No’ on a contract offer from the provincial government. Results released by the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation (STF) last night showed that 90% of STF members voted against the new contract offer. 92% of STF members voted.
In a statement released last night, Education Minister Jeremy Cockrill said he was disappointed by the result of the vote and that “both sides should immediately return to the (bargaining) table and avoid any further sanctions that could jeopardize instructional time and important milestone events for Saskatchewan students.”
In a video posted on social media, STF president Samantha Becotte said “It is government who isn’t listening. We need to see action, we need to see improvements, and they need to take this process seriously.”
Both sides said that they want to get back to the bargaining table.
In recent days leading up to the vote, Premier Scott Moe and Education Minister Jeremy Cockrill have both encouraged teachers to approve a new deal. Cockrill told media that a result of a ‘no’ vote could result in lengthening the school year, and Moe had said that the proposed deal was ‘fair’.

Masters pitches idea for new Downtown Regina Library Location

Regina Mayor Sandra Masters has an idea where the new central Regina Library branch should be located.
Masters mused on Thursday that a potential location for the new downtown branch could be in the soon-to-be-closed Hudson Bay store in the Cornwall Centre shopping mall. The Bay announced this week that the store’s location would be closing in 2025.
The Regina Public Library (RPL) recently issued an Request for Proposals (RFP) for possible locations for a new central branch.
“With the Bay opening up, if we move to an RFP in the near future I hope they (local builds and construction companies) would put in a bid on the RFP for a reconfiguration or redoing of the external nature of the space,” Masters said.
In 2022, the RPL board voted to build a new central branch, with initial costs to build a new library estimated at $125 million.

Each week leading up to the 2024 election, The SKoop Political Briefing will highlight a constituency that has nominated a candidate from at least both major parties. Today, we look at Regina South Albert. This is a new riding this election cycle, with boundaries on the south side of the city between Regina Pasqua and Regina University. Neighbourhoods in the constituency include Albert Park and Albert Park South, Hillsdale, and Whitmore Park.
The incumbent: Aleana Young was acclaimed as the NDP candidate. Young is the incumbent MLA for Regina University and will now contest Regina South Albert following the boundary changes.
The challenger: Khushdil ‘Lucky’ Mehrok will hold the Sask. Party banner in 2024. Mehrok is a restaurant owner in Regina.
The takeaway: This seat is safe for the NDP. The power of incumbency is strong and following the redistribution, Young will have an easier time winning than in 2020 when she narrowly defeated Tina Beaudry-Mellor.
