Saskatchewan Party promises improved womenâs health care

The first week of the Saskatchewan Partyâs campaign for re-election was focused on affordability and cost of living. This week, the party seems to be shifting towards health care, starting with a focus on womenâs healthcare.
Saskatchewan Party leader Scott Moe was joined by Sask. Party candidates and cancer survivors Laura Ross (Regina Rochdale), and Sarah Wright (Regina Lakeview) to introduce two new promises. The party promises to allow at-home cervical self-screening as an alternative to a pap test and promises to help cover some of the costs associated with fertility treatments, up to $20,000.
The party said it would provide a 50 percent refundable tax credit for the cost of a first fertility treatment. The credit would help cover the costs for fertility treatments and related prescription drug costs to a maximum of $20,000, which would mean a $10,000 benefit.
Moe said, âThe Saskatchewan Party will improve access to health services for Saskatchewan women through these important new initiatives. A strong and growing economy means our government can provide better services for everyone, and these are two ways we can improve health care for women in Saskatchewan.â
Moe made the announcement in Regina Lakeview, Carla Beckâs home constituency.

Beck promises to hire 100 more Mounties and local officers
NDP leader Carla Beck speaks in Regina (Jeremy Simes)
On Monday, the Saskatchewan NDP announced a plan to hire 100 more mounties and municipal police officers.
NDP leader Carla Beck reiterated her plan to scrap the Marshals Service, pledged to hire 100 mounties and local police officers and invest an additional $10 million into mental health resources each year.
Beck told the media, âIâve heard from so many families who are scared to send their kids down to the corner store after dark, people who are scared to walk their dogs, seniors who are afraid in their houses and people in rural communities who are concerned about the long and growing wait times to respond to RCMP calls.â
Earlier this summer, the Saskatchewan Party government announced $17 million to hire 100 municipal police officers, create safer communities and expedite police training. Beck said the NDP would maintain that funding commitment if elected.
NDP candidate Nicole Sarauer also held a press conference to discuss âmismanagementâ in healthcare spending, highlighting the challenged AIMS program.

Canadian Parliament in gridlock over RCMP documents
West Block of Canadian Parliament (Government of Canada)
Ottawa has ground to a halt following the second week of debate on whether or not RCMP documents related to a green-tech foundation should be turned over to the house.
The Conservatives say the debate will continue until the Liberals hand over unredacted documents to the RCMP about government money misspent by a green-tech foundation. House Speaker Greg Fergus ruled last Thursday that the government "clearly did not fully comply" with the order, which is related to a now-defunct foundation responsible for doling out hundreds of millions of federal dollars for green technology projects. The Liberals could put forward a motion to end the debate, but Liberal House leader Karina Gouldâs office says itâs up to the Conservatives to end the âfilibuster.â
The RCMP say they have the redacted documents the government already provided to the House but have raised doubts about whether they can legally use documents handed over by Parliament as part of an investigation.

Donauer to be challenged in Saskatoonâs Ward 5
Saskatoon Ward 5 City Councillor Randy Donauer.
Ward 5 City Councillor in Saskatoon Randy Donauer was first elected in 2010. 14 years later he is seeking another term but will face at least two challengers this fall.
Earlier this year, The SKoop reported that Donauer would seek re-election. On a recent flyer mailed to constituents, Donauer says he âvoted 95 times to reduce spending and cut taxes, including against the 2023-24 budget because tax increase was too high.â Donauerâs other priorities for re-election include crime and safety, fiscal responsibility, roads, snow removal, and core services.
Over the summer, Donauer was named in a $25 million class-action lawsuit against the Legacy Christian Academy. He filed an affidavit denying any allegations.
Last week, former federal NDP candidate Kyla Kitzul announced she had filed the paperwork to challenge Donauer after expressing her opinions on Twitter. Kitzul will not be the only challenger; local resident Tyler Knihnitski is also going to be on the ballot in Ward 5.
Ward 5 includes the northern part of Saskatoon, including the neighbourhoods of Lawson Heights, Silversrping, Silverwood, University Heights, and the Saskatoon Airport.
The municipal election will be held November 13.
