Trudeau says he has ā€˜full confidenceā€™ in Freeland amidst rumours of tension

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland

New reporting claims tensions have been rising between Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland.

The Globe and Mail reports that tensions between the two leaders have risen over economic messaging and low approval ratings. A senior government source told CBC News that ā€œFreeland was not resonating with voters in the way the PMO had hoped.ā€

Trudeau responded to the reports, saying, ā€œI have full confidence in her abilities and the work we're going to be doing together.ā€ At a press conference at the NATO summit, the Prime Minister continued, ā€œShe has been a close friend, an ally and a partner in doing really big things for Canada, and will continue to be.ā€

Another big reveal in the reporting was Trudeauā€™s openness in attempting to recruit former Governer of the Banks of Canada and England Mark Carney. When asked directly about Carney, Trudeau said ā€œI have been talking with Mark Carney for years now about getting him to join federal politics. I think he'd be an outstanding addition at a time when Canadians need good people to step up in politics.ā€

Former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney.

Following the shocking byelection loss in Toronto-St. Paulā€™s, some Liberal MPs have been quietly calling on Trudeau to examine his political future, with Freeland and Carney coming up as names of possible successors.

Political watchers will remember former finance minister Bill Morneau exiting politics on the heels of a Liberal government scandal to lead the OECD. He dropped his bid just weeks later and has criticized the Liberal government on tax policy. Some speculate that the PMO would seek to squelch leadership hopefulsā€™ opportunities and show Freeland the door.

Pierre Poilievreā€™s top advisor Jenni Byrne took to Twitter and said ā€œNow Trudeau needs a head for an increasingly antsy caucus & he has decided that is Freeland.ā€

A spokesperson for the federal government denied the tension claims, saying, ā€œThese assertions are not accurate. The prime minister and his office have full confidence in Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland. The Deputy Prime Minister has been working tirelessly and effectively to serve Canadians since she was first appointed to cabinet in 2015."

Sask. Party candidate nominated in Nutana

The Saskatchewan Party has nominated its candidate for the constituency of Saskatoon Nutana.

Mumtaz Naseeb was acclaimed last night by Saskatchewan Party members in Nutana. Mr. Naseeb is a mental health professional in Saskatoon and has a Masterā€™s Degree in Social Work and is a Registered Social Worker.

Nutana includes neighbourhoods like Buena Vista, Nutana, and Haultain. Saskatoonā€™s Broadway Avenue is in this riding. Nutana is one of the safest NDP seats in the province electing notable members like Pat Atkinson and Cathy Sproule. Erika Ritchie is the current NDP MLA and candidate, winning in 2020 by a margin of 34%.

Naseeb is the 53rd candidate nominated by the party ahead of this fallā€™s election. The Sask. Party does not currently have any nominations scheduled for the remaining 8 constituencies.

Saskatoon Chief Mistawasis candidates Parminder Singh and Don McBean.

Each week leading up to the 2024 election, The SKoop Political Briefing will highlight a constituency that has nominated a candidate from at least both major parties. Today, we look at Saskatoon Chief Mistawasis. This is a new constituency that was created with parts of Saskatoon Willowgrove and Northwest. It includes the established neighbourhoods of Lawson Heights and the new developments in Aspen Ridge and Evergreen.

The incumbent: Parminder Singh won a contested nomination to become the new Sask. Party candidate after Gord Wyant stepped down to run for Mayor. Singh works as a branch manager for Curo Canada and is the treasurer of the Saskatoon Sikh Temple (West).

The challenger: Don McBean was acclaimed as the NDP candidate for the riding. He is a retired teacher and school administrator.

The takeaway: This should continue to be a safe seat for the Sask. Party, with former Sask. Party MLAs Gord Wyant and Ted Merriman representing this area in the past. In 2020, Wyant held the riding by a 26% margin. However, with Wyant not running again, who knows what could happen!
