New name in Regina Mayor’s race
Bill Pratt (CTV News Regina)
A fifth candidate has stepped forward to run for Mayor of Regina.
Bill Pratt made the announcement that he’s joining the race Tuesday evening in downtown Regina. Pratt said, "It’s time to hit the refresh button and get this city back on track," he said in his remarks. “We can do better. It’s time for engaging leadership. It’s time for Regina to embrace a vibrant business community. It’s time to inspire the best of all citizens.”
Pratt served as CEO of Eden Care communities from 2018 to 2021. Before that, he served as the director of development for the Winnipeg Art Gallery as well as the President and CEO of Manitoba’s Lung Association.
Pratt said his focus will be on integrity, cohesion, and respect at the city council, as well as on making downtown more inviting.
Pratt will be up against incumbent Mayor Sandra Masters, as well as Brandon Abtosway, Kevin Kardash and Shawn Spavier.
The official nomination period begins in the next two weeks with the municipal elections scheduled for November 13.

Sask. Party emphasizing public safety ahead of writ period

While the Saskatchewan NDP has recently made headlines with pre-campaign announcements, the Saskatchewan Party has made a number of pre-writ announcements, as well, many of which have been focused on public safety and crime.
Minister of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety Paul Merriman has appeared in several Saskatchewan communities this week, making multiple announcements on a new $17.1 million plan the government is committing towards a multi-ministry approach to safer communities and neighbourhoods.
On Monday, Merriman was in Regina announcing $3.8 million in funding towards 32 new frontline officers for the Regina Police Service.
Later that same day Merriman was in Moose Jaw, where he announced $952,000 to hire eight new police officers for that police force. He also made announcements Wednesday in Weyburn of $238,000 to hire two new officers for Weyburn Police Services, and announced $357,000 in Estevan for three new officers for that police service.
Last week, as part of the total $17.1 million announcement, Merriman and Saskatchewan Party MLAs announced funding for up to 37 more police officers in Saskatoon.
These announcements by the Saskatchewan Party government signal a likely strong focus on public safety that’s to come in the upcoming election.

Sask. Party nominates candidate in Moosomin-Montmartre, completes official slate of candidates
Saskatchewan Party members held a contested nomination in Moosomin-Montmartre this week and nominated Kevin Weedmark as their candidate for the 2024 provincial election.
Weedmark is the editor, publisher, and owner of the World-Spectator, Plain & Valley, and Ag News. He is the President of the Moosomin Chamber of Commerce, Chair of the Moosomin Housing Authority, and a member of the Community Builders Alliance and the Moosomin Economic Development Committee.
The Saskatchewan Party has now nominated all 61 candidates for this fall’s vote. The NDP have nominated 52.

Each week leading up to the 2024 election, The SKoop Political Briefing will highlight a constituency that has nominated a candidate from at least both major parties. Today, we look at Humboldt-Watrous. This rural riding includes its namesakes Humboldt and Watrous.
The incumbent (party): Raquelle Hilbert is the founder of Wolverine Drilling, is a former special education teacher, and serves on the board of Sask. Groundwater Association and Canadian Water Resources Association. Hilbert won a hotly contested nomination earlier this year.
The challenger: Kevin Fallis is a healthcare worker. He has been an SEIU-West member for 21 years, previously serving as a shop steward. He was acclaimed earlier this summer.
The takeaway: This is a safe Sask. Party seat. The Saskatchewan Party, specifically Donna Harpauer, has represented this riding since 1999. In the 2020 election, the Sask. Party received just under 73% of the vote.
