Sask First Tribunal Releases Report: Federal Regulations will cost province $7.1 billion
Sask. First Tribunal (CBC News)
The Saskatchewan Government will not comply with the federal Clean Electricity Regulations when they come into effect following the release of a report from the Sask. First Tribunal.
According to the report, the province would lose 4,200 jobs and the economy would take an $8.1 billion hit.
Attorney General and Minister of Justice Bronwyn Eyre said, “This report offers irrefutable, independent evidence that these federal regulations will have a substantial impact on the cost of electricity in Saskatchewan and, as a consequence, our economy and way of life. We cannot participate in federal economic harm to our province.”
In the report, the tribunal found regional differences between provinces were not taken into account. The report states “Saskatchewan has only three percent of Canada’s population but would bear at least 15 percent of the total costs of CER compliance.”
The new clean electricity regulations are expected to come into effect on January 1, 2025. You can read the full news release here.
Trudeau Liberals lose longtime Toronto stronghold in byelection
The federal Conservative Party elected a downtown Toronto MP.
The downtown Toronto riding of Toronto St. Paul’s has been painted blue for the first time since 1988.
The Conservative’s Don Stewart claimed a shocking victory with 42% of the vote edging out Liberal Leslie Church’s 40%.
Vote counting went into the early morning with the election called at 4:30 am in Toronto. All ballots were counted by hand and 86 candidates put their names forward. Typically ballots will see around six candidates depending on the part of the country but this time dozens of people registered out of protest.
Ahead of the vote, both major parties were trying to set expectations. Senior Conservative advisor Jenni Byrne even told CBC News that she expected to lose the race before voting had closed and that St. Paul’s is a longtime Liberal riding.’ While on social media it seemed like every Liberal cabinet minister made an appearance in the riding.
Stewart and the Conservative’s campaign message was ‘Send Trudeau a Message.’ Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre is now saying that all Canadians should now have the opportunity to have their say and called on the Prime Minister to call an election.
The reason this byelection had so much attention was because many pundits, including Liberals, say this is a referendum on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s leadership.

Saskatoon Mayoral candidate suing the city over Housing Accelerator Fund requirements
Cary Tarasoff
Any amendments to the Housing Accelerator Fund will need to be made at Thursday’s council meeting in Saskatoon. One mayoral candidate is taking his opposition to the Court of Kings Bench.
A public hearing is being held at City Hall tomorrow to make any potential amendments to the $41 million in federal funding attached to the Housing Accelerator Fund.
The current proposed changes include making four units as of right and allowing four storeys to be developed within 800 meters of public transit. Mayor Charlie Clark said this is about more than just the money saying, “We're not just making a decision about this $40 million, but about some other key federal funding coming up that we need to help build our city.” By approving these zoning changes, the city would also see funding for a new rapid transit system and increased infrastructure funding.
Saskatoon Mayoral candidate Cary Tarasoff is taking his opposition beyond the walls of city hall and into the Court of Kings Bench saying, “They don't realize the devastation that this can cause and also the financial harm. Our taxes are going up leaps and bounds, and that's nothing compared to what's coming.”
It is unlikely the Court will hear Tarasoff’s argument before the council’s decision on Thursday. Tarasoff placed fourth in the 2020 mayoral race with less than 5% of the vote. City councillor and mayoral candidate Cynthia Block will vote on the plan on Thursday.
Many other cities across the country have already accepted money from the Housing Accelerator Fund. Industry associations related to housing have been advocating for the city to accept the deal in order to address the growing housing crisis.
