Sask. wins court injunction against CRA
Justice Minister Bronwyn Eyre
The Saskatchewan government has won a court injunction against the CRA attempting to take the carbon tax revenue the province withheld.
Justice Minister Bronwyn Eyre said, “The court ruled in our favour, blocking the federal government from unconstitutionally garnishing money, pending the full hearing and determination of the continuation of the injunction by the Federal Court.”
According to federal documents, the province owes $42.4 million in unpaid carbon tax levies including interest. The emergency injunction will halt any clawback of funds until a judge makes a ruling. The government intends to dispute any future charges.
The province asks the court to declare the collection notice invalid or unlawful, and that it be voided on constitutional grounds. The province argues that the previous Supreme Court decision that the carbon tax be applied fairly across the country has been ignored following the heat pump exemption.

Sask. NDP nominate candidate in Warman
NDP candidate Erica Baerwald and MLA Vicki Mowat.
The Sask. NDP have nominated their candidate for the Warman constituency.
Erica Baerwald won a contested nomination defeating one other candidate, Mark Thunderchild. She is a manager at an international relief and development organization and a town councillor in Hepburn. She is actively involved in her community and has a distinguished 20-year career with experience in conflict resolution, policy research, and the implementation of training programs.
Baerwald is the NDP’s 44th candidate nominated ahead of this fall’s vote, and the party’s 24th female candidate.
The next NDP nomination is scheduled for Saskatchewan Rivers on July 24.

Brittney Senger and Jon Owojori
Each week leading up to the 2024 election, The SKoop Political Briefing will highlight a constituency that has nominated a candidate from at least both major parties. Today, we look at Saskatoon Southeast. This riding had very little change after the provincial boundary commission. The riding includes the neighbourhoods of Lakewood, Briarwood, and Rosewood.
The incumbent: Jon Owojori won a hotly-contested nomination beating two other candidates. Owojori will look to succeed long-time incumbent MLA Don Morgan. He is an ecotoxicologist and has conducted research at the University of Saskatchewan. He also owns an immigration consulting firm.
The challenger: Brittney Senger was acclaimed as the NDP candidate for the riding. She is a non-profit organizer who has worked until recently in Ottawa at the Broadbent Institute and Equal Voice Foundation.
The takeaway: This race favours Owojori and the Sask. Party, as Don Morgan consistently garnered 60% of the vote last election. Both of these candidates are new, having never run before. Both parties will be campaigning hard here.
