Souris-Moose Mountain nomination process facing questions

Steven Bonk

The Weyburn Review is reporting that the Souris Moose Mountain Conservative Party federal riding association will be scrutinizing the party’s process that recently nominated Saskatchewan Party MLA Steven Bonk.

Bonk won the federal Conservative nomination over the weekend following two days of voting. The controversy at the time was that the candidates only had two weeks to campaign before the vote.

Incumbent MP Robert Kitchen previously announced he would not be seeking the nomination. Bonk announced his intention to seek the nomination the same day. Torquay Mayor Mike Strachan also announced his intention a few days later.

According to reports, Kevin Kay, president of the riding association, said there is a five-day appeals period for the nomination process to be scrutinized, and there may be an official announcement by the end of the week to confirm if Bonk is accepted as the official candidate for Souris-Moose Mountain. He noted several concerns raised about the process for this nomination, and the association is awaiting more information as part of the appeals period.

One association member spoke on the record and said he is requesting a formal meeting to review the process and noted the constituency association has the power to reject Bonk’s nomination. However, the federal party retains the final say.

Two police officers attacked by teens in Saskatoon

Two Saskatoon police officers are injured after an alleged attack in the Hampton neighbourhood.

According to reports, police were called to a scene around 9:00 pm Tuesday. When they arrived they saw an injured 15-year-old boy surrounded by a group of teenagers. When the officers requested the kids to clear the area to perform first aid, “A physical altercation ensued between the officers and the (youths),” police said.

“Following the arrival of additional police officers, two 15-year-old males and two females, age 14 and 15, were arrested and are facing a combination of charges relating to public intoxication, obstructing police, theft under $5000, and assaulting the police officers,” the Saskatoon Police Service said in a statement.

Police did not disclose the injuries of the officers, but confirmed they are not life-threatening. The injured male was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Crime continues to be a top issue heading into the Saskatoon municipal election this fall.

Barret Kropf (left) and Jordan Wiens

Each week leading up to the 2024 election, The SKoop Political Briefing will highlight a constituency that has nominated a candidate from at least both major parties. Today, we look at Dakota-Arm River. This riding includes the area along Highway 11 between Saskatoon and Regina. The major communities are Outlook, Chamberlain and Davidson.

The incumbent: Barret Kropf is a new candidate for the Saskatchewan Party and will look to succeed incumbent Sask. Party MLA Dana Skoropad. Kropf is a chaplain and has worked with hockey and soccer teams for the past thirty years.

The challenger: Jordan Wiens of the Saskatchewan NDP is a research agrologist from Saskatoon who grew up on a grain farm.

The takeaway: This is a safe Sask. Party seat. The Saskatchewan Party has held this riding since 1999 with Greg Brkich and Skoropad. In 2020 the Saskatchewan Party won with 76% of the vote. The Saskatchewan United Party has also nominated a candidate for this riding.
