New Brunswick to intervene in Sask. pronoun court challenge

New Brunswick Premier Blaine Higgs

The Government of New Brunswick has applied for intervener status in the case against the Government of Saskatchewan’s pronoun policy.

Earlier this year a judge ruled that the court challenge against Bill 137 can proceed. The Saskatchewan Government said that since they invoked the notwithstanding clause of the Constitution, the challenge should be dismissed.

A few weeks ago the Government of Alberta applied for intervener status.

In a statement, the New Brunswick government said, “This is a constitutional issue about whether the notwithstanding clause is the final word when a legislature invokes it. We believe that legislative assemblies have the right to make laws that are important to the people of their province, and that they have the right to protect those laws through the use of the notwithstanding clause, if necessary.”

New Brunswick Premier Blaine Higgs recently passed Bill 713, a similar piece of legislation to Bill 137 in Saskatchewan.

Advocates in favour of the court challenge say Bill 173 harms transgender youth. Several Pride organizations have barred the Sask. Party from attending their annual parades as a result of the bill.

Duelling campaign announcements scheduled in Saskatoon

The official campaign period for municipal elections is well underway, and political watchers in Saskatoon are buzzing about two press conferences scheduled for today.

It looks like both Gordon Wyant and Cynthia Block will each be holding a press conference today where it is expected that they each announce their candidacy for Mayor of Saskatoon.

Cynthia Block’s announcement will happen first at 10 am at the Canada Building downtown. Block has been a City Councillor representing Ward 6 since 2016.

Gord Wyant’s announcement will follow shortly after at noon. Wyant has served as a Saskatchewan Party MLA representing Saskatoon Northwest from 2010 to present and served in various cabinet roles including Attorney General. Wyant served as a City Councillor from 2003 to 2010.

The SKoop will have more information on the pressers in tomorrow’s edition.

Jeremy Harrison says a response to calls for investigation coming ‘very shortly’

Jeremy Harrison (Discover Humboldt)

Jeremy Harrison has been in the news ever since the final day of the spring sitting when the Speaker alleged Harrison brought a gun into the assembly and harassed him by sending hundreds of texts.

Harrison admitted to bringing a long gun into the legislative building nearly a decade ago and later told reporters that sending a text to the Speaker that included an expletive was inappropriate.

The NDP opposition wrote to the Speaker and Legislative Security offices inquiring into the incident. Speaker Randy Weekes indicated his willingness to cooperate with an investigation writing, “Please advise as to how committee members would like to proceed with this request.”

In response to Weekes, last week NDP deputy leader Vicki Mowat called on the House Services Committee to appoint an independent investigator and called for testimony from Premier Scott Moe, Jeremy Harrison, Lori Carr, and advisor to the Premier Reg Downs.

Questioned by media, Jeremy Harrison told reporters “House leadership are going to be responding in due course on that. So it’s not really my response to give,” as for the timeline, Harrison added, “that will be coming very shortly.”

Minister Harrison resigned as Government House Leader and remains Minister of Trade and Export Development.

As discussed last week, the Saskatchewan NDP continue to run their new “streeter” interviews ads on Facebook and Instagram, and they’re spending a pretty penny to get them in front of voters. According to the Meta Ads Library, the NDP spent over $5,000 in the past week to promote their ads on Facebook and Instagram. That is up from $0 spent the week before.

Meanwhile, the Saskatchewan Party spent about $400 on Meta ads last week.
