Housing decisions are considered in Saskatoon and Regina
Housing continues to be top-of-mind for elected officials in the provincesā two largest centres.
In Saskatoon, council has added a high school land levy, which could add up to $2,000 to the sale of every new single-family homes in the city. The levy is being used to pay for an additional 9 acres of land needed for two new high schools and a leisure centre in what will be the Holmwood neighbourhood, east of the new Brighton development. The province agreed to pay half, but the city was left with the remaining tab. Mayor Charlie Clark said there was simply no other way.
CEO of the Saskatoon and Region Home Builders Association Nicole Burgess expressed her disappointment, saying, āThis, we feel, was a missed opportunity, and this lack of co-ordination has placed us in the very difficult situation we have found ourselves in today.ā The motion was passed unanimously by council.
A long-running discussion over a proposed condo development in Reginaās Douglas Park neighbourhood also continued this week.
As reported by business publication allSaskatchewan, the Regina planning commission began public hearings this week on the 90-unit condo project. City administrators are recommending the planning commission approve the project; city council ultimately has final say on the project going ahead or not.
The proposed development next to french language school Du Parc Ecole Francophone led neighbourhood residents to come out āin drovesā to oppose the proposed development last fall, with residents citing parking and property value concerns.
Stu Niebergall, President & CEO of the Regina & Region Home Buildersā Association, said his organization supports the condo project.

Sask. Party candidate Gregory Seib (left) and the NDPās Jordan McPhail (right)
Each week leading up to the 2024 election, The SKoop Political Briefing will highlight two constituencies that have nominated a candidate from at least both major parties. Today, we look at Cumberland. This riding had no change after the provincial boundary commission. Cumberland covers the expansive northeast half of the province and includes communities like La Ronge, Stanley Mission, Wollaston Lake, and Creighton.
The incumbent party: Jordan McPhail is the NDPās candidate and is currently a Town of La Ronge councillor. Born and raised in La Ronge, McPhail has been involved with the NDP for a long time. He has worked closely with outgoing MLA Doyle Vermette.
The challenger: Gregory Seib is carrying the Sask. Party banner in this election. He is currently the Education Coordinator for Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation Education Authority for Deschambault Lake. He completed his Bachelor of Education and taught in Prince Albert, Asquith and Deschambault Lake, as a teacher and Principal.
The takeaway: This is very likely a safe NDP seat. McPhail may not be an incumbent, but he has worked closely with the outgoing MLA in a riding that has never elected a conservative ever. The NDP, or the CCF before it, have held this riding since 1952.
