Government, STF nominate members for arbitration panel
Things are moving forward on the binding arbitration process to settle a new teachers contract in Saskatchewan.
The Saskatchewan Teachersâ Federation has nominated Dawn Harkness to serve as the Teachers Bargaining Committee (TBC) representative on the arbitration panel. Ms. Harkness is a retired Saskatoon public schools teacher and principal.
The Government-Trustees Bargaining Committee (GTBC) has nominated Greg Chatlain. Mr. Chatlain was previously the director of education for Greater Saskatoon Catholic Schools Division.
Both sides agreed to nominate former law professor and USask College of Law Dean Daniel Ish as arbitrator for the proceedings.
The two members will make arguments on the issues of classroom complexity and wages. After hearing arguments, Mr. Ish will write a legally binding decision.
A start date for the arbitration process is expected to be announced soon.

NDP candidate nominated in Sask. Rivers
NDP candidate Doug Racine.
The Sask. NDP have nominated Doug Racine to be the candidate for Saskatchewan Rivers.
Racine served twelve years in the Canadian Armed Forces before leaving the force and obtaining a law degree. He is a practising lawyer with a home office on Muskeg Lake Cree Urban Reserve in Saskatoon. He is the founder of the Aboriginal Law Group.
At his campaign launch Racine said, âUnder the Saskatchewan Partyâs watch, healthcare has crumbled, (and) our childrenâs education has taken a second seat to the corporate buddies of the Sask. Party, but the biggest issue in this election might very well be âhonesty and integrity.â The SUP and SP seem to be in short supply of bothâenough is enough.â
Racine notably mentioned the âSP and SUPâ as Saskatchewan Rivers has three contenders for the seat.
Nadine Wilson has served as the local MLA since 2007. She was removed from the Sask. Party caucus for misrepresenting her vaccination status during the COVID-19 pandemic. Wilson later became leader of the Saskatchewan United Party, now led by Jon Hromek. Wilson will look to hold a riding she has held for nearly two decades and may garner enough support to make a difference in the result.
The Saskatchewan Party will also look to win the riding and have candidate Eric Schmalz join the caucus.
Racine is the NDPâs 45th candidate. The next nomination on the schedule will be the NDP in Dakota-Arm River on August 1.

Each week leading up to the 2024 election, The SKoop Political Briefing will highlight a constituency that has nominated a candidate from at least both major parties. Today, we look at Regina Northeast. This riding has changed slightly and includes the neighbourhoods of Uplands, Glencairn, and Parkridge.
The incumbent (party): Rahul Singh was acclaimed as the Sask. Party candidate and had record-setting attendance at his nomination with hundreds of supporters showing up. He will look to replace incumbent MLA Gary Grewal following Grewalâs motel issues.
The challenger: Jacqueline Roy is a middle years teacher in Regina and a former STF councillor. Roy won a contested nomination last year. The NDP won this riding in a by-election in 2018 and has its sights set on taking it back in 2024.
The takeaway: This is a tossup, but leaning NDP. This riding has been won by both parties since 2018. Former finance minister Kevin Doherty unseated an NDP incumbent in 2011, the NDP won a by-election after Doherty retired, and Gary Grewal won the riding back in 2020. This riding will be one to watch as Singhâs local popularity will go up against a dedicated NDP team set on winning this one.
