Regina City Councillors move to rename Dewdney Ave.
Two Regina City Councillors are putting forward a motion to rename Dewdney Avenue. Dewdney is likely the best-known street in Regina, and is seen as an unofficial demarcation line between âNorthâ Regina and âSouthâ Regina.
Andrew Stevens and Dan LeBlanc say that it is not right for the people of Regina to recognize Edgar Dewdney, a historical figure âdirectly tied to the development and administration of harmful policies including the oversight of Residential Schools.â
Some local business owners in Regina do not agree with the motion saying, âI think it should stick the way it is, especially for any of the businesses that have been on Dewdney â weâve been on the corner basically known as Winnipeg and Dewdney for 40 years, going on actually 45,â said Terry Potter a local businessman.
Campaigns to rename the street have been in action since 2018. The Dewdney Park and Pool was renamed to Buffalo Meadows in 2021, and the idea is to rename the street from Dewdney to Buffalo.

Beck once again promises to pause fuel tax if elected this fall
Sask. NDP leader Carla Beck is once again renewing her call to pause the provincial fuel tax.
Speaking in front of a Regina gas station yesterday, Beck said that Saskatchewan families are âbreaking the bank to fill the tank.â The NDP leader said pausing the tax is âsomething that would save Saskatchewan families hundreds of dollars at a time when they desperately need it. If we are given the privilege of forming government in the fall, we will suspend the gas tax.â
This is the first official campaign-style promise since the legislature rose last week. The NDP had previously proposed a motion that would pause the 15 cent per litre PST on gas and diesel for 6 months. The Sask. Party defeated the motion.
Just months ago Manitoba NDP leader Wab Kinew made the fuel tax pause a key promise in his election victory. In Alberta the United Conservatives did the same thing. More recently, federal Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre called for the carbon tax to be removed from the pumps this summer to âgive Canadians a break.â
Premier Scott Moe has previously voiced his opposition to the idea, saying the tax pays for highways. âWe see the NDP finally come up with one idea. Again, no idea on how theyâre going to pay for that idea,â he has said.
Yesterday it was announced that Saskatchewanâs inflation rate had fallen to 1% month-over-month, the lowest in years.

Each week leading up to the 2024 election, The SKoop Political Briefing will highlight a constituency that has nominated a candidate from at least both major parties. Today, we look at Saskatoon University-Sutherland. This riding includes the central part of the city east of the river. Both parties have won this seat in the last two elections.
The incumbent party: Tajinder Grewal won a contested nomination and will be the NDP candidate. Incumbent NDP MLA Jennifer Bowes is not seeking re-election. Grewal is an active volunteer with the New Democrats, on community organizations, and works as a researcher at the University of Saskatchewan.
The challenger: Ghislaine McLeod will hold the Sask. Party banner in 2024. McLeod is a small business owner and former constituency President who is active within the community.
The takeaway: This seat will be competitive, with the edge given to the NDP. With no incumbent MLA, this riding could be close, especially given the fact that both parties have won this seat by less than 500 votes in the last two elections.
