Cheryl Oates
A veteran political strategist from Alberta will be taking on a new campaign this fall.
Ahead of the provincial election, the Saskatchewan NDP has confirmed that Cheryl Oates will be the party’s campaign director for the fall campaign.
Ms. Oates served as the Executive Director of Communication and Planning to Alberta Premier Rachel Notley from 2015-2019. She is currently a Principal at public affairs firm GT & Co. and also co-hosts an Alberta-based political podcast The Discourse with Erika Barootes. Oates began her career as a journalist for Global News.

NDP launches new ad series: ‘Time for a Change’
The Saskatchewan NDP has launched a series of new ads on Facebook and Instagram.
The ads feature a host approaching people on the street, AKA a “streeter” interview, and asking them what they think of Premier Scott Moe and the Saskatchewan Party. Healthcare access and leadership are the primary focus of the video. The ads are of course negative towards the Saskatchewan Party.
The ads have no mention of the NDP or Carla Beck, and some portions of the ads are shot in what appears to be the Nutana neighbourhood in Saskatoon and in Lakeview in Regina.
The ads lead to a landing page where voters can add their names to the NDP contact list, a common practice for political parties.
According to the Meta Ad Library, the party is running eight different ad versions and appears to be spending a decent amount of money on the campaign. (More on this next week in our Political Ad Tracker).

Saskatoon sees tenth homicide of 2024
Crime continues to be a growing issue, especially in the province’s largest city. Saskatoon Police have reported the city’s tenth homicide of 2024.
The police report stated, “Shortly after 3:00 a.m., June 3rd, 2024, police received a call of a person injured in the 800 block of 22nd Street West. Officers arrived, and found a 29-year-old male who had been stabbed. The male was transported to hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. Members of the Forensics Identification and Major Crime Sections are continuing to investigate.”
The city reported 12 homicides in all of 2023, 13 in 2022, and 7 in 2021. The most homicides reported in one year was 16 in 2019.
As the official campaign period begins for municipal elections, many will be watching to see if crime and safety is a concern for voters and campaigns.
