Sask. Party MLA Joe Hargrave not running again

Joe Hargrave has added his name to the list of incumbent MLAs not seeking reelection this fall.

Hargrave was previously acclaimed as the Saskatchewan Party candidate for his riding of Prince Albert Carlton, a riding he has represented since 2016. Hargrave was recently shuffled back into cabinet as the Minister of SaskBuilds and Procurement.

In a statement released by the Saskatchewan Party, Hargrave said, “My family and I have given this a lot of consideration and have decided I just can’t commit to another four years as MLA.”

Hargrave is the 14th sitting government MLA to announce they will not be seeking re-election. 5 others either lost their nominations or were kicked out of the caucus. The governing party will field 27 incumbent MLAs as candidates.

The NDP nominated Carolyn Brost Strom as their candidate for Prince Albert Carlton in September of last year.

Premier adds new minister to cabinet

Terry Jenson (right) is sworn into cabinet (CTV News)

Premier Scott Moe welcomed a new face to the provincial cabinet yesterday. The MLA for Martensville-Warman Terry Jenson has been appointed as Minister of SaskBuilds and Procurement.

Jenson replaces outgoing MLA Joe Hargrave who resigned from cabinet and announced his departure from politics. Jenson was first elected in 2020 and has served as Legislative Secretary for Immigration and Career Training.

In addition to Jenson, a few minor changes were made to the legislative responsibilities of two other MLAs. The MLA for Estevan and Minister of Highways Lori Carr will assume the role of Government House Leader. She will replace Jeremy Harrison after he resigned that position for not disclosing bringing a long gun into the legislative building. MLA for Saskatoon Silverspring and Minister of Corrections and Policing Paul Merriman was named Deputy House Leader.

Sask. Party first to strike in pre-election ad blitz

The pre-election ad blitz appears to have started.

The Saskatchewan Party has launched a new attack ad that was posted to YouTube this weekend.

The 30-second video starts with an image of Carla Beck and a voice telling viewers that ‘the NDP’s radical and reckless agenda would crash the economy and lose jobs.’ The primary message of the ad is that the NDP would ‘take Saskatchewan back.’

The Saskatchewan Party is running the video as a paid ad on Facebook and Instagram, according to the Meta Ads library. The party is also presumably promoting the video on YouTube, although Google does not have a similar ads library that the public can view, and the party may be lining up this ad to also run as a TV spot.

The Saskatchewan NDP are not currently running any digital ads on Meta platforms.

The ad is released ahead of the bi-annual Oil and Gas Show held in Weyburn on June 5 and 6th. In what can be described as a conservative-friendly environment, one can be sure that Premier Scott Moe will be reiterating the messages in the ad that portray the NDP as anti-energy and against oil, gas and potash.

Moe, Estevan MLA Lori Carr, and the new candidate for Weyburn Mike Weger will not be the only politicians campaigning at the Oil and Gas show in Weyburn. NDP leader Carla Beck made a point of her and her caucus members attending the last show in 2022. Beck who is originally from Lang, will likely be attending the show with multiple candidates and caucus members.
