Contested nominations are scheduled for both parties this August

Both major political parties will be holding upcoming contested nominations to be a candidate this fall.

Kelvington Wadena

The Saskatchewan Party will hold a contested nomination for Kelvington-Wadena on August 8. There are currently two candidates who have put their names forward.

Chris Beaudry is a former assistant coach of the Humboldt Broncos. He survived the tragic bus crash that killed 16 players and staff. He is a fourth-generation farmer who is now a motivational speaker, and a mental health healing advocate professional. This will be a contested nomination as one other candidate has put their name forward.

The candidate will replace Hugh Nerlein as the Saskatchewan Party candidate on the ballot after Nerlien rescinded his nomination to spend more time with his family. Kelvington-Wadena is a safe seat for the Saskatchewan Party.

Melville-Saltcoats

The Saskatchewan NDP will hold a contested nomination for Melville-Saltcoats on August 6. There are currently three candidates who have put their names forward.

Carter Antoine was the federal NDP candidate for Yorkton in the 2019 election. Karen Hovind is a teacher with the Good Spirit School division and a member of the STF council. Nolan Matthews is a teacher and coach at Melville Comprehensive.

Melville-Saltcoats is currently represented by Saskatchewan Party MLA Warren Kaeding. This is a safe Saskatchewan Party seat, but the NDP will look for new enthusiasm following a contested nomination.

Both parties have had a majority of their candidates nominated by acclamation so far.

NDP campaign director Oates reaches out to supporters

NDP campaign director Cheryl Oates

Saskatchewan NDP campaign director Cheryl Oates sent an email to NDP members over the weekend to underscore the importance of the next 100 days.

In her first email to NDP supporters, Oates outlined how there is 100 days until the election and this is the last time to start donating and preparing for the fall election. She said, “I am so excited about Saskatchewan. This campaign presents a historic opportunity to elect Carla Beck as the first female Premier of Saskatchewan. Carla is the reason I took this job. I know she is ready to get to work, making life more affordable and healthcare more accessible for everyone. With 100 days of unwavering commitment, we can achieve this milestone.”

Oates also introduced herself to members, describing how she was the director of communications for Rachel Notley from 2015-2019, worked on the last three Alberta NDP campaigns, and worked on the recent victorious Manitoba NDP campaign.

As we have in the past, in the coming weeks The SKoop Political Briefing will look at what the parties are doing for email marketing leading up to the provincial election.

New SaskPower executive bullish about Nuclear

Saskatchewan’s future small modular reactor

SaskPower’s newest executive says nuclear energy is the future of energy in the province.

Leonard Clewitt was named executive vice president of nuclear development for SaskPower. In his previous role, Clewitt was the chief nuclear officer at Bruce Power in Ontario.

Last fall, SaskPower created a nuclear division to develop a plan for small modular reactors. Earlier this year, the provincial government announced that Estevan would be the home site of Saskatchewan’s first SMR.

Speaking to Evan Bray, Clewitt said, “But you certainly need base load generation, and I think Canada and many places around the world are looking at nuclear to fill that need.” He continued by saying, “I think nuclear is one of the best options when achieving an emissions-free grid.”

The site is still in its early development stages with plans of being operational in the early to mid 2030’s.
