Sask. Party launches new attack at NDP
The Saskatchewan Party launched a new ad over the weekend titled “The NDP keep runing down Saskatchewan.”
The ad begins by showing pictures of NDP MLAs and candidates with different quotes, and ends with what could be a new election slogan for the party “Strong Economy, Bright Future.” The ad was accopanied by a social media post attacking an NDP candidate in Prince Albert over the weekend. The post highlights a tweet from when the candidate was working as a nurse in 2020 saying, “It’s pretty darn demoralizing to be living in Saskatchewan right now.”
In a separate social media post over the weekend, Premier Scott Moe said, “The NDP Trudeau coalition has launched a censorship campaign against energy companies – the very companies who power nearly everything in our daily lives. Bill C-59 sends the wrong message. We should be proud of Canada’s industries and all that they do for the environment, sustainability, and energy security, and not be silenced by a federal gag-order preventing anyone from sharing that story with the world.”

This continues the Sask. Party’s strategy of connecting Sask. NDP leader Carla Beck to federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh, who is in a supply-confidence agreement with the federal Liberals and therefore supporting unpopular Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The Sask. Party launched a video ad earlier this year that they are still running on Facebook with the tagline, “The NDP is Trudeau’s choice for Saskatchewan.”
On the Ads front, the Saskatchewan NDP are continuing to spend more on paid advertising on Facebook and Instagram, with the party spending over $4,000 last week. The Saskatchewan Party spent about $400, which is in line with recent weeks.

Federal commons committee says farmers will be hit by capital gains tax
Canadian farmers are adding their names to a growing list of people opposed to federal capital gains tax changes coming this year.
Wheat Growers Association President Gunter Jochum told the committee, “This policy inadvertently targets farmers who produce food to meet domestic and global demand and, as small businesses that are family-run, they do not represent the wealthiest among us.” According to a report done by Farm Credit Canada, farmland increased in value by 11.5% in the last year. Jochum continued saying, “My farm is my retirement, and a family farm transfer is a very difficult job to do to satisfy everyone’s needs within the family.”
Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland passed the changes as a separate motion from the federal budget. The changes will take effect on June 25. The government has projected $19 billion in revenue from the tax change over the next five years.
Doctors and small business owners have been vocal about the changes as many have used their businesses to plan for retirement.

Weyburn City Councillor seeking Mayor’s chair
Jeff Richards is a Weyburn City Councillor
The City of Weyburn could see a new Mayor for the first time since 2016.
City Councillor Jeff Richards announced he would put his name forward as a candidate for Mayor. Richards was first elected to council in 2016 and was re-elected in 2020.
Richards serves on the Board of Directors for SaskPower and the Weyburn Credit Union and was a past director for SaskWater and the Weyburn and Estevan Chamber of Commerce. He was the past president of the Weyburn United Way and is the Executive Director of the Weyburn Wor-Kin Shop. This organization provides support for adults with intellectual disabilities.
Richards told media he has more to give, “Two, three years back, I thought to myself, if you’re going to keep doing this, serving the people of Weyburn, which by the way, I’m honoured to do and I love it, then probably the next step would be to seek the mayor’s seat. I think there’s a little bit more that I can offer, not a little bit more, frankly. I think I’ve got a lot more to offer.”
The incumbent Mayor Marcel Roy was first elected in 2016. Municipal elections will take place on November 13.
