Sask. crime rate top of Canada for 25th consecutive year

Saskatchewan has the highest crime rate in all of Canada according to Statistics Canada.

Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics has reported that for the last quarter of a century, or 25 years, Saskatchewan’s provincial crime rate ranked worst in the nation. RCMP Commanding Officer and Deputy Commissioner Rhonda Blackmore said, ‘Social issues like addictions, gangs, and the absence of community resources are some of the root causes of crime.”

According to the report, Roughly 2.5 million crimes were reported to police in 2023. Of those, 167,000 came from Saskatchewan, ranking the province sixth in the country. When considering the rate per 100,000 people, Saskatchewan topped the charts at just under 14,000, which was more than double the Canadian average.

The report says homicides are up 275% over ten years. Saskatoon has already seen its 9th homicide of the year. The province has had 23 homicides in 2024, on track to surpass the previous high of 43 in 2022, which included the mass casualty event on James Smith Cree Nation.

Prime Minister Trudeau schedules two more by-elections

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has scheduled two more by-elections for later this fall.

Elmwood-Transcona is an NDP stronghold in Manitoba. The seat was vacated by Daniel Blaikie after he began working for Premier Wab Kinew. The riding was previously held by his father, Bill Blaikie. Polling shows this riding is NDP likely although the Pierre Poilievre Conservatives will be on the hunt for another victory.

LaSalle—Emard—Verdu is a Montreal riding vacated by former Justice Minister David Lametti who resigned after being shuffled out of the Trudeau cabinet. The Prime Minister appointed local councillor Laura Palestina as the Liberal candidate, avoiding a nomination race with three other potential candidates. This should be a safe Liberal seat although polling shows a tight three-way race between the Liberals, NDP, and Bloc.

After the Prime Minister’s governing Liberals shockingly lost the Toronto St. Paul’s by-election earlier this summer, another bad night could indicate more leadership troubles for the Prime Minister.

The by-elections will both be held on September 16. A federal election is not scheduled although all parties are continuing to nominate candidates.

Regina Mayoral race heats up with new entrant

Regina Mayoral candidate Brandon Abtosway

A new face has entered the political scene in Regina.

Brandon Abtosway has announced he intends to seek the Mayor’s chair this fall and will challenge incumbent Mayor Sandra Masters.

Along with showing examples of unfinished projects and road repairs, Abstosway said in a social media ad, “For far too long, City Council has had their priorities backward. I think its time we put our priorities in check and focus on key elements our city relies on every day”

His campaign website says he works as a SaskTel technician. Abtosway is 27 years old and says the failures of the current council have motivated him to get involved. “From the disaster of the REAL District to the Green Bins/Carts; where there is still no official dumping site besides where it always has been, the landfill, and the want to raise the debt limit more and more without any thought on how this would play in the future.”

There are other individuals in Regina that are unofficially campaigning for mayor, but have not announced their bid yet.
