Dates set for binding arbitration hearing
After the longest job action conducted by teachers in Saskatchewan’s history, negotiations were sent to binding arbitration.
The Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation has announced the confirmed dates for the arbitration hearing between the province and the teachers’ union. The arbitration hearing will take place December 16 to 20 in Saskatoon.
The Teachers’ Bargaining Committee named Dawn Hawkness and the Government-Trustee Bargaining Committee named Greg Chatlain as their respective nominees for the panel. Former University of Saskatchewan law professor and Dean of the College of Law Daniel Ish will serve as the arbitrator.
During the arbitration hearing, both sides will submit written positions and make presentations related to wages and class complexity accountability framework. The panel mentioned above will weigh all arguments and present the decision in a legally binding report. The report will then become part of the final collective agreement.

Sask. Party nominates candidate in Kelvington-Wadena
Chris Beaudry (Brandon Sun)
The Saskatchewan Party has nominated its candidate for the constituency of Kelvington-Wadena.
Chris Beaudry won a contested nomination beating one other candidate.
Beaudry was an assistant coach with the 2017/18 Humboldt Broncos, who were tragically involved in the bus crash that killed 16 players and staff. Since then, Chris has been heavily involved in the field of mental health and healing. He is a motivational speaker.
Beaudry is the 56th candidate nominated by the party ahead of this fall’s election. He also replaces incumbent MLA Hugh Nerlien as the candidate for Kelvington-Wadena after Nerlien rescinded his nomination to spend more time with his family earlier this year.
The NDP nominated local farmer Lorne Schroeder as their candidate.
There are currently no more nominations scheduled by either party.

Lloydminster candidates Colleen Young and Adam Tremblay.
Each week leading up to the 2024 election, The SKoop Political Briefing will highlight a constituency that has nominated a candidate from at least both major parties. Today, we look at Lloydminster. This constituency includes the Saskatchewan side of Lloydminster and areas to the north and east of the city, including the towns of Marshall, Pierceland, and Paradise Hill.
The incumbent: Colleen Young was first elected in a 2014 by-election after incumbent cabinet minister Tim McMillan resigned. She was re-elected in 2016 and 2020. Young was recently appointed to cabinet as the Minister of Advanced Education. Before her election, she served as a school board trustee and on the University of Saskatchewan Senate.
The challenger: Adam Tremblay was acclaimed as the NDP candidate candidate. Tremblay is a teacher in Paradise Hill. Tremblay is a graduate of St. Francis Xavier University, with a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Bachelor of Education degree.
The takeaway: This is a safe Sask. Party seat. This constituency last elected a New Democrat in 1995. In the 2020 election, Young won with over 80% of the vote, beating the second-place NDP candidate by more than 3,000 votes.
