Today’s Top Stories

Regina Councillor Terina Nelson running again

Ward 7 Councillor Terina Nelson.

An incumbent Regina councillor is making her intentions known. Terina Nelson will be seeking re-election this fall.

In a statement, Nelson said, “During my tenure, I have been a strong voice for fiscal responsibility, public safety, community development,” said Nelson. “My priorities remain the same when I was first elected which is to ensure that taxpayers dollars are used wisely, working hard to ensure accountability for tax dollars, while always championing initiatives to improve our parks, infrastructure, and public services.”

Nelson went viral on TikTok during budget deliberations last year when she told the rest of the council “You all make me sick!” after the the budget was set to cut a repair to an accessible waterslide at newly-built Wascana Pool.

Ward 7 will feature a rematch from 2020 between Nelson and Shobna Radons. Radons is the President of the Regina and District Labour Council. Nelson won her Ward in 2020 with 30% of the vote.

CUPE, others intervene in Bill 137 legal challenge

The courtroom will be crowded with even more interveners in the legal challenge over the Saskatchewan government’s pronoun policy.

Provincial representatives from CUPE and the Canadian Teachers Federation have filed a joint application for intervener status in the legal challenge to Bill 137, the Parents Bill of Rights, passed in the legislature's emergency sitting last year.

The notwithstanding clause was invoked in the passing of the law, allowing it to stand regardless of whether it violates sections 2, 7 and 15 of Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

“I wish I didn’t have to say this, but CUPE has filed to intervene in the Court of Appeal case regarding Bill 137 — to help protect the Charter rights of Saskatchewan children and workers,” stated CUPE Saskatchewan president Kent Peterson in the news release. “It shouldn’t have to come to this, but unfortunately here we are.” Peterson was the campaign manager for Carla Beck’s NDP leadership bid and sits as the President of NDP MLA Aleana Young’s constituency association.

STF President Samantha Becotte supported the national association’s decision saying, “Teachers must be able to exercise professional judgement and autonomy in supporting students and working with parents to help youth appropriately navigate challenges in their lives.”

UR Pride appealed the law, claiming it violates Charter rights. Back in February a judge ruled that the appeal would be permitted. Since then, the Governments of Alberta and New Brunswick, as well as the Civil Liberties Association have filed for intervener status.

Candidate for PA Carlton Sask. Party nomination withdraws

PA businesswoman and pastor Meghan Mayer.

One week after announcing her intention to seek the Saskatchewan Party nomination for Prince Albert Carlton, Meghan Mayer has withdrawn her name.

In a statement, Mayer said, “When I initially decided to run for Carlton Constituency there were no other candidates in the field. However, with new challengers now in the race, I believe it is in the best interest of the electoral process and the community for me to step aside.”

Over the weekend other information was shared online by Caitlin Erickson, a lead plaintiff in the Legacy Christian Academy class-action lawsuit. Erickson alleged that Mayer, who is a pastor, was campaigning for her nomination from behind the pulpit and in violation of election laws. She also alleged Mayer dressed in blackface.

Incumbent Sask. Party MLA Joe Hargrave recently announced he would be rescinding his nomination to spend more time with his family. The NDP have nominated local nurse Carolyn Brost Strom. No date has been set for the Sask. Party nomination.
