Multiple candidates to be nominated in coming weeks
Both major parties will be nominating multiple candidates in the coming weeks ahead of this fall’s provincial election.
The Saskatchewan Party has three nomination meetings scheduled. White City-Qu’Appelle will elect their candidate on May 1. Three candidates are on the ballot, with Brady Peter, Brad Crasweller, and Nevin Markwart putting their name forward to replace outgoing MLA Don McMorris. In the Cumberland riding, Gregory Seib will be acclaimed on May 8. The party has also scheduled a nomination meeting for Saskatoon Chief Mistawasis for May 21. This will be a contested nomination to replace outgoing MLA Gordon Wyant. Ryan Vanjoff is one of the candidates contesting the nomination.
Raquel Hilbert is seeking the nomination for Humboldt-Watrous and will look to replace outgoing Minister Donna Harpauer. The Sask. Party has already nominated 48 of the 61 candidates ahead of October’s election.
The Saskatchewan NDP has scheduled three nomination meetings in the coming weeks. Members in Saskatoon Westview will choose between April ChiefCalf and Jordan Wiens on May 8. Saskatoon Silverspring will hold a contested nomination with Hugh Gordon and Brendon Proctor putting their names forward. Members in Regina Wascana will choose between Brandon Mutala and Brent Blakeley on May 23.
Erica Baerwald has said she is seeking the NDP nomination in Warman, and leader Carla Beck is slated to have the final nomination in Regina Lakeview later this year. The NDP has nominated 36 of the 61 candidates ahead of the October election.
The Green Party has nominated 11 candidates, the Buffalo Party has nominated 3, and Sask United has 2 candidates.

Trudeau appears on Saskatoon’s YXE Underground Podcast

The Prime Minister made a stop to talk to Eric Anderson, host of the Underground YXE Podcast, on his trip to Saskatoon last week. YXE Underground is a podcast that focuses on the stories of people in Saskatoon “doing amazing things but are flying under the radar.” Anderson says in the introduction to the podcast that he was very sensitive to the fact that the Prime Minister “does not fit the mandate of the podcast (he lives in Ottawa and is slightly above ground) and that he is not overly popular in our city and province.”
On the podcast, Trudeau and Anderson spoke about the importance of teachers, the important role that community leaders play in shaping local societies, and validating and showing appreciation for the work community leaders do.
Journalists from the Canadian Press and CBC News both wrote this weekend about the Prime Minister’s recent strategy of doing more longform and podcast interviews. In addition to YXE Underground, Trudeau has been heard on popular podcasts Freakonomics Radio, Vox’s “Today Explained”, and The Big Story.

Premier in Moose Jaw to expand Mental Health Services in High Schools
Premier Scott Moe was at Peacock Collegiate on Friday with Moose Jaw North MLA Tim McLeod, Education Minister Jeremy Cockrill, and Cannington MLA Darryl Harrison. The government was announcing an expansion of mental health supports in schools. McLeod said “This program and the funding behind the program offer additional staff to allow students an access point to connect them to mental health services that they may require.”
I joined Minister of Mental Health and Addictions Tim McLeod and Minister of Education Jeremy Cockrill at A.E. Peacock Collegiate in Moose Jaw to announce the addition of five more schools across Saskatchewan to the Mental Health Capacity Building program.

NDP education critic Matt Love said, “It’s sad that the government has not made any new investments in Saskatoon and most of rural Saskatchewan. This program was introduced five years ago and it still only covers 15 out of approximately 700 schools in Saskatchewan. This 17-year-old government is running out of steam and just doesn’t understand the challenges facing our kids.”
