PBO estimates capital gains changes to bring in $17.4 billion over five years
The Parliamentary Budget Officer estimates the Liberals’ increase to the capital gains inclusion rate will bring in $17.4 billion in revenue over five years.
That’s two billion dollars less than the federal government projected in its spring budget.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has defended the changes saying, “It is about delivering generational fairness to young people who need the government to spend more on things like housing.” He also posted a video explaining the changes on social media. The post has been viewed over five million times.
The increase to the inclusion rate came into effect June 25 although it has not yet passed in the House of Commons.

Jordan Wiens/Facebook
The Saskatchewan NDP have nominated Jordan Wiens as their candidate for Dakota-Arm River.
Dakota-Arm River includes the area along Highway 11 from Regina to Saskatoon. It includes the communities of Bethune, Chamberlain, Davidson, Outlook, Hanley, and the Casa Rio area outside of Saskatoon.
The Saskatchewan Party has already nominated Barret Kropf as their candidate in this area to replace outgoing MLA Dana Skoropad. The Sask. Party won this riding with over 75% of the vote in 2016 and has held this riding for decades.
Wiens is the 47th candidate nominated by the party ahead of this fall’s vote. Next week will see a string of nominations by both parties, starting with the Sask. Party in Regina Walsh Acres on Tuesday.

Saskatoon Nutana candidates Erika Ritchie and Mumtaz Naseeb.
Each week leading up to the 2024 election, The SKoop Political Briefing will highlight a constituency that has nominated a candidate from at least both major parties. Today, we look at Saskatoon Nutana. Nutana includes the Nutana and Broadway neighbourhoods
The incumbent: Erika Ritchie was first elected in 2020 and serves as the environmental opposition critic. Ritchie is an environmental engineer.
The challenger: Mumtaz Naseeb was acclaimed as the Sask. Party candidate. Naseeb is a mental health worker at various organizations throughout Saskatoon.
The takeaway: This is a safe NDP seat. The NDP has consistently been elected in this riding for decades. Notable NDP figures like Pat Atkinson and Cathy Sproule have represented Nutana.
