Joe Hargrave running for Reeve of RM of Corman Park

Joe Hargrave is not ready to leave politics after all, as the Saskatchewan Party MLA and former cabinet minister announced his intentions to run for Reeve of the RM of Corman Park.

Incumbent Corman Park Reeve Judy Harwood, who has served in the post since 2012, announced earlier this summer that she is not running again.

Hargrave said he spoke with Harwood ahead of his announcement and said, “I have also been good at consensus building. In my role as MLA and in Cabinet, I’ve had a lot of experience in building consensus and listening to all points of view. I think I’m well-suited to this, and I look forward to that role. As I mentioned, the RM is diverse, with agricultural, commercial and residential interests, and we have to take all three into account and have everyone pull in the same direction for the betterment of the RM.”

Hargrave is currently the MLA for Prince Albert Carlton and resides in the Hamlet of Casa Rio located outside of Saskatoon. He owns a car dealership in Melfort.

Hargrave told reporters he’s not ready to be done, saying, “I’m not done serving people and helping my community,” said Hargrave. “I found provincially that I was on the road and away from home and my wife Fran a lot, and it got to be too much. But, I still enjoy what I do, and I believe my background in business and as an MLA and Cabinet Minister will benefit the RM.”

Back in May, Hargrave stepped down as the Saskatchewan Party candidate citing health concerns and his age saying, “My family and I have given this a lot of consideration and have decided I just can’t commit to another four years as MLA.” He told reporters that his decision had nothing to do with the leadership of the Saskatchewan Party.

This news comes one day before the Saskatchewan Party is set to nominate Hargrave’s potential successor. His full interview can be read here.

Dubois running for re-election to Saskatoon council

At a time when Saskatoon can expect large turnover and new faces on council, one incumbent has decided to run for re-election.

Councillor Bev Dubois will be seeking another term to represent Ward 9, a seat she has held since 2016. She previously served on council from 2003-2012 for Ward 10, until she lost to incumbent councillor Zach Jeffries. Her first attempt for council was in 1994 when she lost to Don Atchison in Ward 10. With 17 years of council experience, Dubois is one of the most experienced and recognized councillors in the city.

She voted against the recent tax increases and also voiced her opposition to accepting the Housing Accelerator Fund money and new zoning bylaws.

She is one of the few incumbents to seek another term while Mayor Charlie Clark and councillors Mairin Loewen, Hilary Gough, David Kirton and Sarina Gersher will all leave municipal politics. There will also be a new representative for Ward 6 as Cynthia Block seeks the Mayor’s chair.

New face emerges to seek Sask. Party nomination in Moosomin

The Saskatchewan Party is looking to complete its slate of candidates ahead of this fall’s election and one candidate is collecting endorsements in the province’s southeast.

Kevin Weedmark is seeking the Saskatchewan Party nomination for Moosomin-Montmartre. He will look to succeed incumbent MLA Steven Bonk, who recently stepped down as a provincial candidate to seek the federal Conservative nomination, which he won.

Weedmark is the president of the Moosomin Chamber of Commerce, chair of the Moosomin Housing Authority, a member of the Moosomin Economic Development Committee, and a member of the Community Builders Alliance. He is also the owner and publisher of the Moosomin World Spectator in which he published multiple pages about his campaign.

Weedmark told reporters he has support from the party and members, “First it was local people asking me to run, then MLAs asking me to run, then provincial cabinet ministers encouraging me to run, and I decided I would let my name stand.”

Longtime Moosomin MLA and former Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Don Toth has endorsed Weedmark. Toth represented Moosomin the the Legislative Assembly for 30 years, from 1986 to 2016. He served as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly in the first term of the Brad Wall government. “I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know Kevin over the years, especially during my years as an MLA,” Toth said.

A date hasn’t been set yet for the nomination meeting.
