Saskatchewan to ban cellphones in classrooms this fall

The Minister of Education continued the practise of making announcements via video on the Premier’s X/Twitter account yesterday. The minister announced the government’s plan to ban cell phones in K-12 classrooms starting this fall.

Jeremy Cockrill said, “Technology has its place, but too often, cell phones are taking students’ attention away from what they should be learning,” Cockrill said in a statement. “This new policy will allow students to be more engaged with their teachers and focused on learning the skills and knowledge they need to reach their potential.”

Bernie Howe, the Chair of the Prairie Spirit Board of Education was quoted in the government’s press release, saying, “Limitations of cell phones in our schools will reduce the amount of distractions in our classrooms which will allow our staff to focus on educating our students.”

The NDP issued a response to the announcement with leader Carla Beck saying “cellphones can be a distraction, especially when used by a premier and his minister to distract from their last in the nation record on education.”

Back in June, Premier Scott Moe told reporters he was looking into Alberta’s cell phone ban. Saskatchewan now joins a growing list of provinces banning phones in classrooms including B.C., Alberta, Ontario, Nova Scotia, and others.

Sask. Party sets the tone of upcoming election with pre-writ ad campaign

Premier Scott Moe and the Saskatchewan Party released a new ad over the weekend and hinted at what we can expect during this fall’s election.

The video begins with the Premier saying, “Saskatchewan, we have come so far together.” The video is shot near the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital in Saskatoon.

The video continues, saying there have been nearly 100,000 new jobs since 2007, 35 new health centres and 69 new schools. Moe says Saskatchewan people now have a choice to make, saying, “We can keep our economy strong and our future bright with the Saskatchewan Party, or we can turn back, back to the NDP who will crash our economy and drive away people, jobs and opportunity, just like they did before.”

The video ends by repeating a slogan that has been seen in recent advertising and hints at what to expect during this fall’s election: Strong Economy, Bright Future.

At time of publishing, the Saskatchewan Party has not yet put money behind the ad on Meta advertising platforms (Facebook and Instagram). The Saskatchewan NDP have not spent any money on Meta ads in the past week.

Sask Party nominates candidate in Walsh Acres

The Saskatchewan Party has nominated its candidate for the constituency of Regina Walsh Acres.

The Saskatchewan Party’s Derek Meyers won Walsh Acres in 2020. The NDP’s Jared Clarke won the riding in a by-election following Meyers’s passing in 2023.

The next nominations for the Saskatchewan Party will take place today in Regina Elphinstone and tomorrow in Kelvington-Wadena.
