Andrew Stevens not seeking re-election for Regina City Council

Andrew Stevens

Andrew Stevens, city councillor for Regina’s Ward 3 has announced he will not be seeking re-election this fall.

In a recent newsletter delivered to Ward 3 residents, Stevens said “…after eight years on Council I’m looking forward to moving on to other things. This is the promise I made to my family back in 2016.” He went on to wish the future Mayor and Council all the very best.

The SKoop Political Briefing was the first to report the announcement by Stevens in our Friday newsletter.

The news that Stevens will not run this fall comes perhaps as a surprise to some. He is viewed as a strong progressive voice on Council, and it’s been speculated that he may consider challenging Sandra Masters in the Regina mayoral race.

Stevens has made news several times in his two terms on Council, including when he teamed up with fellow councillor Dan LeBlanc to sue the city manager, Nikki Anderson, over homelessness funding.

Outside of Council, Stevens is an Associate Professor in the faculty of Business Administration at the University of Regina.

Jeremy Harrison resigns as Government House Leader

Jeremy Harrison (left) and Randy Weekes

MLA for Meadow Lake and Minister of Trade and Export Development Jeremy Harrison has resigned as the Government House Leader. The resignation comes as a result of the accusations Speaker Randy Weekes made on the last day of the spring legislative session.

In a statement, Harrison addressed the allegations made by Weekes and said the following:

“On May 16, the Speaker made a number of allegations about my use of firearms. I have never had a firearm in the Legislative Chamber or anywhere in the Legislative Building during the period that MLA Weekes has been Speaker.

“Approximately a decade ago, I was going on a hunting weekend. I stopped at the Legislative Building for a short period of time and brought a properly cased long gun into the building with the knowledge of security officials so as to not leave it unattended in my vehicle in the parking lot. In retrospect, I should not have done this.

“I apologize for this lapse in judgement and for not advising the Premier of this occasion immediatley following the Speaker’s statement. I have offered and the Premier has accepted my resignation as Government House Leader.”

Saying he was surprised and disappointed in the allegations, Harrison told reporters in an interview on Friday that he did not listen to Weekes’ speech and did not recall the incident until after the Premier had spoken to the media. Harrison said, “I categorically and unequivocally deny accusations that were made by the Speaker except for one.” Harrison made the comments while speaking to media in Meadow Lake on Friday.

NDP leader Carla Beck says that either the Premier is lying, or the Minister is. “It can be both but it can’t be neither.”

Premier promises to address disastrous Cumberland House highway

The community of Cumberland House is in a state of emergency due to the lone highway into the community turning into an impassable mud road.

Premier Scott Moe signaled he would promise to fix the road, saying, “We’ll work with the community on any immediate challenges that they have and also work with the community on, you know, what the investment looks like for that road in the future, and I would say it needs to be more, not less.”

The 2024 provincial budget saw a $16 million decrease to the northern highways budget. Speaking to the question regarding the decrease to the northern highways budget, Moe said “There's more work to do and I think there's more reason for us to continue to look at the level of funding that we have in our highways budget and continue to look at increasing it, not cutting it.”

The community and surrounding First Nations jointly declared a state of emergency as grocery and gas supplies are running low. The only medical access into the community is by helicopter. The community is located 300 km north of Prince Albert.
