Former NDP cabinet minister announces Regina council bid
Former NDP cabinet minister Joanne Crofford.
Joanne Crofford has announced her intentions to seek a seat on Regina city council in Ward 1.
Crofford served as an NDP MLA from 1991-2007 in Regina Rosemont. She served in cabinet in various roles including Minister of Status of Women, SLGA, Post-Secondary, Culture, Public Service Commission, Community Resources, and Employment. In 2001 Crofford ran for leader of the party, placing sixth.
Last year, Crofford penned a letter to the Regina Leader-Post calling out the way that Mayor Sandra Masters has handled homelessness in Regina.
This news comes after incumbent Ward 1 councillor Cheryl Stadnichuk announced she will not be seeking another term. Teacher and librarian Jessie Morris is also running in Ward 1, setting up a contested race.
Ward 1 includes the neighbourhoods of Albert Park, Parliament Place, Whitmore Park, and Hillsdale.

Sask. government touts strong job numbers, NDP disagree
The government of Saskatchewan is touting strong jobs numbers according to the latest Statistics Canada report.
The news release read, "Saskatchewan's growing at its fastest pace in more than a century with more people living and working in the province than ever before," Immigration and Career Training Minister Jeremy Harrison said. "Investment in Saskatchewan is driving historic economic growth and job creation, which allows us to take measures to keep life affordable in Saskatchewan, while making record investments in health care, education and our communities."
The report indicates that Saskatchewan unemployment fell to 5.5% in June, below the national average of 6.4%. The report indicated that Saskatchewan saw both an all-time historical population (aged 15 and over) high of 950,100, and an all-time historical off-reserve Indigenous population (aged 15 and over) high of 113,600. Educational service saw the largest growth of nearly 9% accounting for 4,600 jobs.
The NDP disagreed with the governmentâs take on the report, saying Scott Moeâs government lost 1,200 full time jobs in June.
Saskatchewan, itâs time for change. We simply cannot afford four more years of Scott Moe. #skpoli

Stampede kicks off in Calgary - without Trudeau or Singh
The Calgary Stampede is always a whoâs-who showcase for businesses, stakeholders, and elected officials. This year, the Prime Minister will not be attending.
Elected officials at all levels, whether a city councillor, MLA, or MP will be found at least one - often more - pancake breakfasts or hospitality suites. This is the pinnacle political event in Alberta, and arguably western Canada.
With open calls from his caucus to resign, and refusing to meet with caucus until the fall, the fallout from losing a safe, downtown-Toronto by-election, the Prime Minister is looking to avoid âfriendly fireâ. Calgary Liberal MP George Chahal penned a letter to the PM demanding that caucus meet this summer. While Chahal will be flipping pancakes at the Stampede, Trudeau will be preparing for the G7 meeting in Washington.
Trudeau is not the only federal leader staying away from the Stampede festivities. Federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh will also not be there. Singh, like Trudeau, is seeing low popularity numbers across the country, but especially in Alberta as Pierre Poilievreâs Conservatives rise to 40% nationally according to Ababcus Data. Singh may also be avoiding new Alberta NDP leader Naheed Nenshi who wants members to decide if they still want to be associated with the federal party.
On Saturday night, Poilievre spoke to Conservative Party supporters at his Common Sense BBQ in Southwest Calgary.
