Good morning. Lots going on this Friday so letā€™s get RIGHT TO IT!

Hereā€™s The SKoop for Friday, June 7:

  • Teachers announce more sanctions after turning down arbitration,

  • Sask. Party nominates candidate in Humboldt-Watrous, and

  • A look at Saskatoon Stonebridge.

Todayā€™s Top Stories

Teacher job action to start Monday as binding arbitration is rejected

Saskatchewan teachers are bringing back work-to-rule starting Monday.

Teachers had previously voted 55% to reject the latest tentative agreement endorsed by the government and leadership of the Saskatchewan Teachersā€™ Federation. The two sides returned to the bargaining table this week, but their talks did not last long.

Work-to-rule means that teachers will not provide any voluntary service outside the classroom. That includes extra-curricular activities and noon-hour supervision.

Education Minister Jeremy Cockrill spoke with CTV Morning Live and expressed his disappointment that a deal has not come to fruition after the longest period of job action in the provinceā€™s history, saying, ā€œIt's frustrating, especially the decision last night, to reject binding arbitration, and then come out and say that sanctions are starting again on Monday. Certainly, there was progress made at the bargaining table, but now we feel it's time to go to binding arbitration. Let a third party settle this.ā€

STF President Samantha Becotte said although many members agreed with the deal, it included promises for the future and teachers need action now. ā€œIn the conversations that I heard from teachers, their position around the last tentative agreement was that there were too many things that were included that were promises for the future,ā€ she said. ā€œLike I said, we need to see solutions to the growing needs of our students and increasing classroom complexity.ā€

Sask. Party nominates candidate in Humboldt-Watrous

The Saskatchewan Party has nominated its candidate for Humboldt-Watrous.

Racquel Hilbert was nominated as the candidate after winning a contested nomination last night at the Humboldt Uniplex. Ms. Hilbert beat two other candidates.

This is the Sask. Partyā€™s 49th candidate nominated ahead of this yearā€™s election. Donna Harpauer has represented the Saskatchewan Party and the riding since 1999.

The next nomination is scheduled for the Saskatchewan Party in Regina Lakeview on Monday. The Saskatchewan NDP will nominate their candidate for Lumsden-Morse on Tuesday.

2024 election candidates Bronwyn Eyre and Darcy Warrington

Each week leading up to the 2024 election, The SKoop Political Briefing will highlight a constituency that has nominated a candidate from at least both major parties. Today, we look at Saskatoon Stonebridge. The makeup of this riding will change heading into 2024, losing rural communities. The Saskatoon constituency includes the sprawling neighbourhood of Stonebridge, The Willows, and Avalon.

The incumbent: Bronwyn Eyre was first elected in 2016 and has served in various key cabinet roles including Energy and Resources, and is currently Attorney General and Minister of Justice.

The challenger: The NDP held a contested nomination won by Darcy Warrington. He is a Saskatoon teacher and serves on community associations.

The takeaway: This seat will likely go to the Saskatchewan Party. Eyre has represented the riding for nearly a decade and has held various high-profile cabinet positions. Eyre has been the only MLA to serve this constituency. It will lose the rural ā€˜Dakotaā€™ part of the riding and solely include the Stonebridge neighbourhood in 2024, making the margins slightly closer, but odds still favour Eyre.
