Good morning! Yesterday we asked if you think Saskatchewan classrooms should follow Ontario and Alberta to be cellphone-free. Over 75% of our readers that responded said yes they should be banned in classrooms. Here were some of the comments from our fantastic readers:
âMobile phones should be banned in classrooms except for unusual or exceptional circumstances or situations.â
âOverreaction that takes a power tool, when used effectively, out of teachers' and students' hands.â
âI think they should be allowed to be in bags for emergency but no tolerance for use during classâ.
Thanks to everyone that gave us their thoughts on that.
Hereâs The SKoop for Wednesday, June 19:
Moe speaks at farm show breakfast,
Another Saskatoon councillor wonât run, and
Prime Minister Trudeau sits down in rare interview.

Moe speaks to Farm Show, puts conspiracies to bed
Premier Scott Moe/X
The REAL district will be busy this week as Canadaâs Farm Show is hosted in Regina.
The event was kicked off with a Premierâs Breakfast yesterday morning. Later in the day there was a joint announcement between FCC and the Global Institute for Food Security. The theme on Tuesday was âThank a Farmer,â while todayâs is âInnovation.â The conference wraps up tomorrow with a coffee chat with Brad Wall.
Premier Scott Moe focused his comments on the state of the agriculture industry in the province, and how vital this sector is for Saskatchewanâs export economy. On social media, Moe said, âWe have a great story to tell, producing some of the most high quality and sustainably produced products anywhere on earth. When the global ag industry is looking for what is new and what is next, they look to our producers, our province, and events like Canadaâs Farm Show.â
Where the Premier speaks, the media follow. Moe answered questions from the media in a scrum following his address. One reporter asked the Premier to respond to a video from a Speers town hall in which conspiracies such as chemtrails were brought up. Moe responded by saying, âI actually donât believe in chemtrails.â
FCC President Justine Hendricks also renounced claims made by Sask. United that Farm Credit Canadaâs office would move to Quebec, stating that is not true and that the head office will remain in Regina.

Another Saskatoon Councillor not seeking re-election
Mairin Loewen (Broadbent Institute)
Yet another City Councillor is stepping away from municipal politics this election cycle.
Saskatoon City Councillor for Ward 7 Mairin Loewen has announced she will not be seeking another term. Loewen was first elected in 2011 and subsequently re-elected in 2016 and 2020.
In a statement to Global News, she said, âThere is always more to be done, and some work left unfinished, but I am confident that the next council will meet these challenges and continue to build a bright future for our city.â
Loewen joins the ranks of Mayor Charlie Clark, Ward 2 Councillor Hilary Gough, Ward 3 Councillor David Kirton, and Ward 8 Councillor Sarina Gersher. Ward 6 Councillor Cynthia Block is not running for council but is seeking the Mayorâs chair.
That means there will be at least 5 new councillors and a new Mayor in Saskatoon - a majority of the council. The municipal election is slated for November.

Prime Minister sits down with CBC news
Prime Minister Trudeau on the CBCâs Power & Politics
The Prime Minister sat down in a rare one-on-one interview with The CBCâs David Cochrane on Power & Politics. In a wide-ranging interview, Justin Trudeau discussed foreign interference, capital gains, and his political future.
On the hot topic of foreign interference, party leaders Singh and May have had two different accounts of the confidential report. When asked if Trudeau had any MPs affected by foreign interference in his Liberal caucus, Trudeau answered, âBe wary of any leader claiming their party isnât affected by foreign interference.â
Discussing the changes to capital gains, Trudeau said, âI understand that people who've made very, very well in their life don't want to get a little less in the way of profits, but this is a fundamental choice around a fairer society and a fairer community and a fairer economy.â The tax change passed the House of Commons and is set to come into effect this summer.
With polls continuously showing the Conservatives ahead by 20%, and nearly 60% of Canadians having an unfavourable position of the Prime Minister, Trudeau defended himself by saying Canadians arenât in decision mode yet, and, âWhat you tell a pollster, if they ever manage to reach you, is very different from the choice Canadians end up making in an election campaign.â There has been much speculation regarding the Prime Ministerâs future, but Trudeau remains confident he will lead his party in the next election currently slated for the fall of 2025.
