Sask. Chamber launches platform ahead of provincial election

CEO of the Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce, Prabha Ramaswamy

The Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce has announced its platform, or campaign wish list, ahead of this fall’s provincial election.

Chamber CEO Prabha Ramaswamy said, â€śThis is a pivotal time for the province. We are positioned to become a critically important partner in addressing global food insecurity and energy transition. Over the coming four years, the Saskatchewan government needs to continue to capitalize on the province’s vast potential to fuel growth and new investment.”

The platform is titled Fueling Momentum 2024 and consists of five pillars; Laying the Foundation for Growth, Leveraging our Strengths, Attract and Grow Investment, Energy Transformation, and Invest in what Matters.

Among the list of actionable requests, the Chamber is asking for the PST to be reduced from 6% to 5% and reduce the corporate income tax rate to 10%. The chamber is also recommending lowering the minimum age to work to 13. Another recommendation was implementing a non-refundable tax credit of up to 50% for individuals and corporations. Eligible businesses must have less than 50 full-time employees and a minimum of 50% of employees must reside in the province.

The platform was sent to Chamber members Thursday morning. You can read the full platform here.

Saskatoon announces public transit safety plan day after the City’s 11th homicide

Director of Saskatoon Transit Mike Moellenbeck and Assistant Fire Chief Yvonne Raymer/Saskatoon StarPhoenix)

Public safety remains top of mind in Saskatoon as police released details on the city’s 11th homicide this year.

A 66-year-old man was found on the 400 block of Forrester Road, in the parking lot next to Fairhaven School with fatal injuries. Police did specify in their statement to the public on Wednesday morning that there was no immediate risk to public safety.

Public safety is also an issue in Saskatoon Public Transit. Since the beginning of the year, there has been an increase in security presence at the Downtown terminal, and the Confederation and Market Mall terminals.

The City announced a number of initiatives to improve frontline safety. These measures include improved processes with fire and police, banning problem riders, installing cameras on select busses and terminals, and providing front-line staff de-escalation training and mental health support.

Just last month a 20-year-old girl and a 15-year-old girl were stabbed in an altercation involving several passengers and an 18-year-old man was stabbed at a bus stop.

Each week leading up to the 2024 election, The SKoop Political Briefing will highlight a constituency that has nominated a candidate from at least both major parties. Today, we look at Regina Rochdale. Rochdale encompasses the Northwest corner of Regina.

The incumbent: Laura Ross was first elected in 2007 and has served in cabinet twice, including as the current Minister of Parks, Culture, Sport, Women, and Francophone Affairs. Prior to politics Ross and her husband were farmers, then caterers, then she worked as a real estate agent.

The challenger: Joan Pratchler worked as a teacher and principal in Regina for decades. She then left the field of education and became a registered nurse. Pratchler was one of the first candidates nominated by the NDP last year.

The takeaway: This is a Sask. Party leaning, but will be a battleground. This riding will be close as recent polling indicates the NDP gaining support within the city of Regina. Laura Ross is a well-known candidate who has represented the area since 2007; however, the former riding of Qu’Appelle Valley elected consecutive New Democrats prior to her election.
